DELICIOUS CHOCOLATE LIP BALM
Mmmm, Chocolate
Here’s What You’ll Need To Do It Yourself:
(1) BEESWAX
Beeswax Bar
Why you’ll love it: It’s a renewable source, it is chemical free and so cheap in the stores.
Why use it: Beeswax will act as the base and hold all the other ingredients together. Be sure to use 100% pure beeswax to ensure that your lip balm is 100% natural. Here I am using 100% pure Australian beeswax.
Petroleum Jelly (L) and 100% Pure Australian Beeswax (R)
What’s the alternative: Petroleum jelly (if you really must *sigh*)
(2) RAW / PURE HONEY (optional)
Honey
Why you’ll love it: It’s healthier and even tastier than using granulated sugar.
Why use it: The honey gives the kick in sweetness that you’ll need in the delicious lip balm.
What’s the alternative: The use of honey in this lip balm is completely optional. You may opt to leave it out to make a sweet smelling chocolate lip balm without the sweet taste as well.
(3) COCOA POWDER (unsweetened)
Cocoa Powder
Why you’ll love it: cocoa powder will give a strong chocolate taste and smell and the resulting color is always pleasing to the eye.
Why use it: To make this chocolate lip balm chocolaty!
What’s the alternative: drinking chocolate powder, sweetened cocoa powder, hot chocolate powder, chocolate flavored milkshake powder
(4) VANILLA ESSENCE (optional)
Vanilla Flower & Bean Pods
Why you’ll love it: The yummy essence! The yummy smell! Mmmm . . .
Why use it: When making chocolate cake, vanilla essence is used to enhance the flavor of the chocolate. I’m not so sure how well it works here, but it smells great, and so will your delicious lip balm.
What’s the alternative: chocolate essence . . . Or, you may opt to leave it out
(5) SMALL CONTAINERS (as many as you have and feel you need)
(6) WATER BATH (basically hot water in a pot or bowl)
Here’s How To Do It Yourself:
First things first, make sure that the containers you plan to use as your lip balm containers are thoroughly cleaned and dried of all moisture. I wash the containers and leave them to dry overnight. That way, I am sure that they are dry and I avoid having any tiny fluffs in them from cloth-drying them off.
I used old eye cream containers which still had the labels on. An easy way to take these off is to soak the caps in warm water for a few minutes then gently wash the labels off with a soapy brush. Again, I recycle and use an old toothbrush.

Once your containers are clean and dry, it’s time to get cooking. To estimate how much beeswax you will require per container, you may spoon some into one of the containers so that it’s full to the brim. That way you will know whether your container will hold one tsp, one tbsp and so on of lip balm.

For this recipe, each container I use requires 1 tsp of beeswax. Therefore 2 tsp will make two little tubs of chocolate lip balm for me.
Put 2 tsp beeswax in a container into the water bath for 10 minutes
This is in order to turn the beeswax liquid. I do not disturb the container for the full 10 minutes. However if you feel the need, you may place a lid or stir the beeswax to quicken process.

Once the beeswax is liquid, remove from the water bath and add 1 tsp of honey, 1 tsp of cocoa powder and 2-3 drops vanilla essence
Be careful with the amount of cocoa powder you put into the beeswax. Sometimes when making this product, I use a larger amount of cocoa powder (say one and a half tsp) to create a chocolate lip balm with a stronger smell and deeper/darker chocolate color.
*Note: The more cocoa powder you mix in, the darker the subtle chocolate-brown color stain to your natural lip color will be when you wear the lip balm. Use a small amount of cocoa powder if you are interested in the aroma and look of the chocolate lip balm while in the container without the chocolate mild stain on the lips.
Stir the mixture until it turns into a thick gooey paste then return it to the water bath
Stir cocoa powder, honey and vanilla essence into the beeswax
Once the mixture is a thin liquid consistency again, remove from the water bath and pour into the molds (lip balm containers)
Pour the final product into the containers
Close the lids on the containers and leave to set in the freezer for an hour
This time is dependent on the size of container you used. You may also leave the lip balm to set overnight at room temperature.
Do not disturb the containers during the setting process. Removing the lid too soon might pick some of the soft mixture up, and ruin the mold.

The finished product is great as a gift to friends or for your own personal use.
